Ciao!
My name is Jessica and I am a fourth year Architecture and Interior Architecture dual at Lawrence Technological University. I am actively involved on campus in Delta Tau Sigma Sorority, LTU KCP Scholars, and Student Government. All of these organizations have allowed me to create a wonderful LTU family.
In high school, I knew that I wanted to study abroad one day. Looking at study abroad programs even aided in the narrowing down of architecture schools that I looked into when choosing the perfect university. When I learned of all of the opportunities that the LTU Study Abroad Program offered, I knew that Lawrence Technological University would offer me the best education opportunities with the possibility of studying abroad in Italy.
What initially intrigued me about studying abroad was the vast amount of new experiences I would be able to have while being able to study in the vicinity of so many architectural gems. Many people say that studying abroad empowered them to feel more confident about themselves and their designs and I hope to learn these things first hand in my travels this fall of 2014. By studying in the Italian culture, I intend to use the knowledge gained in order to aid in my understanding of the process and development of the design field. I hope to be able to analyze the aspects that shaped the Italian culture and building styles and learn how to use the culture, area, and history of a space in order to shape the design into something unique that takes from the history and is truly a beneficial design for the area while doing everything desired.
This semester I plan to get out of my comfort zone and experience things that I would normally shy away from. I know that the Lawrence Tech students travelling with me will help push me to do these things and I am grateful that they will be by my side while abroad with Kent State University.
The hardest part of traveling abroad for a semester will most likely be leaving my LTU family behind, but I know that if I need any of them they will reach out and do what they can from the USA, and I’m travelling with one of my LTU family members as well. The family that I have at LTU has been very encouraging in my decision to go to Italy and I know that while they hate to see me leave, they will have a warm welcome for me when I return.
Another difficulty of traveling for a semester is packing for a semester in a single suitcase and a carry-on. I will be leaving most of my wardrobe behind and taking things that travel well and that can be layered with other items to create a new look. It will be quite the change to only have a few items to choose from and will make getting up and getting out into the Italian lifestyle that much easier. (Note that my backpack will only be holding my electronics as they are required to be all together with new airline regulations.)
This is an experience that I have been looking forward to and I hope that it beats my expectations. In leaving tomorrow, I am both nervous about the flight and overly excited about the opportunities that lie ahead of me these next four months.
We leave tomorrow night! Wish us luck!
Jessica
